Set in 1908 in rural Indiana, this is the story of Elnora Comstock who is determined to attend high school even though her widowed mother calls her goal a "foolish dream." Elnora finds comfort in her friendship with Mrs. Porter, a free-spirited naturalist, but when taxes on the farm come due, Elnora must choose between her own dreams and her mother's demand that she quit school to help with the harvest.
